Two explosive devices were detonated by a bomb squad after a resident discovered them and turned them in to the fire station on Balboa Island on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Newport Beach police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad responded to the station on Marine Avenue at 1:17 p.m. after receiving a call that a resident had found two pipe bombs.

The resident found the devices in bushes in the 100 block of Amethyst Avenue and turned them in to the fire station, authorities said.

Police blocked off the street and a crowd gathered outside the station as the bomb squad put a containment vessel over the devices and detonated them.

Authorities said they didn’t know who left the devices or how long they had been there.

“There were no evacuations, and we do not believe that the resident or anyone else was being targeted,” said Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.
