The long-debated proposal for a sports field at Corona del Mar High School will be the topic at Wednesday’s Speak Up Newport.

The meeting begins with a reception from 5:15 to 6 p.m., following by a Q&A from 6 to 7:10 p.m. Both are at the Civic Center’s Community Room, 100 Civic Center Drive, Newport Beach.

Scheduled to speak are Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustee Karen Yelsey, CdM High Principal Kathy Scott and the district’s Director of Secondary Education Kirk Bauermeister, as well as representatives from the Newport Citizens for Responsible Growth and Eastbluff Homeowners Assn.

Earlier this year, the proposed field was the subject of various community meetings. Residents near the campus raised concerns about the project’s potential noise, light and traffic disturbance. Student-athletes and coaches, however, showed their support to give the campus an upgraded facility, whose final design and costs are not yet known.

The project, as currently defined, would give the school’s existing track and field 1,000 bleacher seats, ticket booths, storage space, lights and more. The district is also studying adding a synthetic turf field.
