Briefly in Sports: Laguna Beach High to hold baseball camps

The Laguna Beach High baseball program will host a summer baseball session for returning high school players only starting July 7 at Skipper Carrillo Field on campus. The camp will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday each week through July 30.

On the heels of the high school summer camp comes a Youth Summer Baseball Camp offered by the Laguna Beach baseball program beginning July 8 at Skipper Carrillo Field. The camp is open to youth ages 5 to 14, plus incoming freshmen students and will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday each week through July 31.

Tourneys coming

Two upcoming girls’ beach volleyball tournaments will be held next month at Main Beach.

The Laguna Girls’ 16-Under Laguna Open Volleyball Tournament will be held July 10, and the Girls’ 14-U Laguna Open will run July 11.

USA Women win gold

The USA Women’s Senior National Water Polo Team, which includes Laguna Beach athletes Annika Dries and Makenzie Fischer, won gold Sunday at the 2014 FINA World League Super Final at Kunshan, China. Team USA won the tournament title by defeating Italy in the final, 10-8.

Dries scored two goals for Team USA which rebounded from a 2-1 deficit after one quarter to gain a 4-4 halftime tie. The U.S. went on to shut down Italy in the third quarter and took an 8-4 lead into the fourth.

Maggie Steffens led Team USA with three goals.

Team USA reached the final by downing Australia, 13-4, in a semifinal game Saturday. Fischer scored two goals in the win.

Team USA, coached by Adam Krikorian, went undefeated to win the Super Final gold medal for the eighth time in 11 tournament appearances. Team USA started the tourney with a shootout victory (11-10) over Russia, then defeated Canada (16-5), defending world champion Spain (8-5), Brazil (11-1), Australia and Italy.

Team USA won each of its final five games by no fewer than two goals.

USA Men split two

The USA Men’s Senior National Water Polo Team, which includes Nolan McConnell of Laguna Beach, split its first two games at the FINA World League Super Final at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Team USA started the tournament against Canada. Down by five goals in the second half, the U.S. roared back to stun the Canadians, 12-9, Monday. McConnell scored once in the comeback win.

In its second game, Team USA dropped an 8-4 decision to Australia.
