The USA Women’s Senior National water polo team, which includes Laguna Beach High graduate and current Stanford player Annika Dries, won its fifth straight major FINA championship and sixth FINA World League Super Final title by scoring a 9-7 victory Sunday over Italy in the gold medal match at Tianjin, China.

Dries, who was named MVP of the women’s NCAA tournament last month, scored on a rebound shot to pull USA to within 5-4 in the third quarter.

USA will compete July 16-31 at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai.

Junior Tennis workouts begin Monday

All Court Tennis is registering summer tennis workouts for Junior tournament players. Workouts will focus on advanced technique, fitness and conditioning, mental toughness and match strategy for Junior competitors (Intermediate-level players), tournament training for advanced-level players and Junior Team Prep Academy for players starting out in team or United States Tennis Assn. satellite competition.

The workouts are directed by Julie Heussenstamm, United States Professional Tennis Assn. teaching pro, and will take place starting Monday through Aug. 15 at Alta Laguna Park. For information, visit https://www.allcourttennis.com.

Cardio Tennis starts Monday

Cardio Tennis is offering morning and evening workouts beginning Monday through Aug. 15 at Alta Laguna Park in Laguna Beach. The workouts are open to those 18 and older. Signup information can be found at https://www.allcourttennis.com.

Stewart offering volleyball camps

Lance Stewart, director and head coach at volleyballnow.net, has announced dates for several upcoming volleyball camps. Both beach volleyball camps, held at the courts at Main Beach, and a strength and conditioning program at Guyer Field at Laguna Beach High, start July 11.

Skimboard world championships coming to town

The 35th annual Victoria Skimboards World Championship of Skimboarding is July 16 and 17 at Aliso Beach in Laguna Beach. The competition, which has a live video webcast, runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
