Fischer paces USA to water polo win

Makenzie Fischer of Laguna Beach High scored two goals Tuesday and the USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team opened play at the FINA Women’s Intercontinental Tournament with a 9-4 victory over Brazil.

The tournament is running daily through Sunday in Auckland, New Zealand.

Fischer’s two goals tied Melissa Seidemann (Walnut Creek/Stanford and Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills/UCLA) for game-high scoring honors.

Team USA outscored Brazil, 5-0 in the third quarter, to pull away from a 3-3 halftime tie.

Team USA played China and Kazakhstan Wednesday and Thursday in pool play. Scores from both matches weren’t available at press time. Team USA also will play Friday through Sunday.
