Briefs: Laguna baseball camp coming

The Laguna Beach High baseball program will offer a Summer Baseball Camp for local youth starting July 8 at Skipper Carrillo Field on campus.

The camp is open to youth ages six to incoming freshmen students and will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday each week through July 31.

Dries, Fischer excel

Laguna Beach athletes Annika Dries and Makenzie Fischer scored three and two goals, respectively, Wednesday for the USA Women’s Senior National Water Polo Team which won its second match in as many games at the FINA World League Super Final in China with a 16-5 victory over Canada.

Dries scored two of her three goals in the opening half which ended with Team USA leading, 8-2, and the former Laguna Beach High standout scored her final goal in the third quarter. Fischer, wrapping up her junior year at Laguna, scored both of her goals in the fourth quarter as the U.S. extended its lead to 15-3.

In its tournament opener Tuesday, Team USA clipped Russia, 11-10, in a shootout. The score was tied, 6-6, at the end of regulation.

Dries scored once in the shootout.

Team USA finished group play Thursday with a match against defending world champion Spain. The score wasn’t available at press time.

McConnell contributes

Laguna Beach’s Nolan McConnell scored two goals Sunday for the USA Men’s Senior National Water Polo Team which dropped a 16-11 decision to Serbia as the teams wrapped up their four-game series at Stanford University.

McConnell, an attacker, scored the first goal of the match and scored his final goal in the second quarter. Team USA trailed, 8-7, at the half.

Serbia won all four games in the series (13-6, 4-3, 18-15, 16-11) which started June 4 at the University of Pacific in Stockton.

Team USA travels this week to Dubai for the FINA World League Super Final. The U.S. begins tournament play Monday against Canada, and takes on Australia Tuesday and Hungary Wednesday.

Tourneys coming

Two upcoming girls’ beach volleyball tournaments will be held next month at Main Beach.

The Laguna Girls’ 16-Under Laguna Open Volleyball Tournament will be held July 10, and the Girls’ 14-U Laguna Open will run July 11.
