Briefs: Laguna program earns No. 4 rating

The CIF Southern Section released on Tuesday the top 10 girls’ and boys’ athletic programs in the 23rd annual Commissioner’s Cup.

Laguna Beach High placed fourth in the boys’ team standings.

Laguna and Harvard-Westlake both scored 13 points, but the Breakers took the fourth-place spot by virtue of a tiebreaker. The Breakers were awarded three points each for cross-country, volleyball, and swimming and diving, and two points each for water polo and basketball.

Mater Dei finished first in the boys’ team standings to claim the cup title for the first time. Loyola, which had won the previous five cup titles, was second and Oaks Christian was third.

Rounding spots six through 10th were Harvard-Westlake, Palm Desert, Temecula Valley, Santa Margarita, Los Osos, and Nordhoff and Cathedral, which tied for the 10th spot.

The USA Women’s Senior National Team opened up the FINA World Cup Tuesday and ran away with an 18-1 victory over South Africa in Group B pool play at Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

The defending World Cup champs, whose roster includes Annika Dries of Laguna Beach, never trailed in its opener. Dries was one of 10 players to score once in the match. Kami Craig (Santa Barbara) led the scoring with four goals.

Team USA played Australia Wednesday and Hungary Thursday to complete group play. Scores from both games weren’t available at press time.

The tournament runs though Sunday.

The USA Men’s Senior National Team, which includes Nolan McConnell of Laguna Beach, begins FINA World Cup tournament play Tuesday at Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Team USA will go up against South Africa, Montenegro and Serbia in group play.

Michael Lewis of Laguna Beach took his third win of the season and earned double pole positions for Rounds 11 and 12 at the Elkhart Lake, Wisc., road course Sunday .

Lewis won the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.

Lewis set the pace and captured first-place honors in Round 12 in the No. 98 Competition Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian Porsche 911 and also took the podium on two other occasions with one second- and one third-place finish during the two-day event.

The results allowed Lewis to earn valuable championship points for the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.
