John Burroughs High School students were being offered counseling services after a recent graduate fatally shot himself on a freeway overpass in Burbank over the weekend, officials said.

Tarzana resident Jinoo Han was remembered by a school official as an outstanding and popular student with amazing grades. He graduated from Burroughs last year and had turned 19 a week before his death.

“He took almost every Advanced Placement class we offered,” said John Paramo, Burbank Unified’s director of secondary education, who was principal of Burroughs when Han was a student. “He was well liked, and he will be missed.”

Han went on to attend UCLA in the fall of 2014, but withdrew that same quarter, according to the university. Details on why he withdrew were not available.

At around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to the Olive Avenue bridge over the Golden State (5) Freeway after receiving reports of shots fired, said Burbank Police Sgt. Claudio Losacco.

Han, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered nearby.

An autopsy is pending, according to Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

The freeway overpass was closed temporarily during the investigation.
