Glennwood taps Wyland, hosts fundraiser for new home

A local organization that is building a home for young adults with developmental disabilities is trying to raise the funds to complete the project.

Glennwood House of Laguna Beach is hosting its 2013 Walk and Roll-A-Thon Fundraiser at 10 a.m. on Feb. 2 at Main Beach.

Glennwood, a nonprofit foundation, is renovating an assisted living home to help young adults with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other special-needs adults, transition out of their parents’ homes. The future residents will learn skills toward independence, such as money management and grocery shopping.

The foundation is in the process of remodeling a former senior assisted living home at 2130 S. Coast Hwy. that when complete, will house 50 residents.

The walk will start at 10:30 a.m. at Main Beach, south of the playground, and follow the boardwalk to Pacific Coast Highway through Heisler Park to Divers Cover and back.

Registration starts at 10 a.m. and participants should bring their donor forms and donations. Each participant is asked to raise $500, but any donation is accepted.

Prizes will be given out at the end.

Participants are asked to wear Glennwood shirts or dark blue or green.

For more information, contact volunteer and event coordination Cindy Beaman at Cindy@glennwoodhousing.org.

Glennwood House is also hosting famous marine life artist Robert Wyland this month to do a mural on its new residential home.

Wyland, who is also a Laguna Beach resident, has volunteered to paint a mural on an outside wall of the future Glennwood House of Laguna Beach.

Joining the artist will be 10 future Glennwood residents, who will help create the mural and learn about ocean conservation and sea life from Wyland.

Wyland will paint the mural on the dining hall’s outside wall at 10 a.m. on Jan. 19 at 2130 S. Coast Hwy. Parking will be available in the garage in the back.
