City hosting lifeguard tryouts

Laguna Beach lifeguard tryouts will begin at 9 a.m. Feb. 23 at Main Beach.

Sign-in starts at 7:30 a.m., and applicants should expect to enter the water at 9 a.m. Candidates must complete a 1,000-meter swim in 20 minutes to advance to the Seasonal and Rookie Ocean Lifeguard Academy.

The Marine Safety Department expects to hire 10 to 12 graduates of the academy, said Marine Safety Lt. Kai Bond. About 100 candidates participated in physical testing last year.

Additional tryouts make take place. Interested applicants can follow the instructions at https://www.lagunabeachcity.net/cityhall/marine/employment.

A physical testing and training waiver must also be completed. Applications must be submitted through the city’s online process by 4 p.m. Feb. 21.
