Police to conduct DUI checkpoints Sunday

Laguna Beach Police officers will be at various locations on St. Patrick’s Day to stop and arrest alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers.

Police will conduct DUI checkpoints from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday in areas with high frequencies of collisions and/or arrests.

DUI collisions have led to 60 injury crashes harming 85 people in the last three years, Lt. Jeff Calvert said in a police-issued news release.

In California, DUIs led to 774 deaths in 2010, the release said. Figures for 2011 resemble those for 2010 after falling dramatically the previous five years.

Funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
