High School Roundup: Track teams 2-0 in league

The Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ track and field teams each were victorious in their final Orange Coast League competition before heading into spring break.

The Laguna girls team glided past host Estancia, 65-25, while the boys, 101-24, over the Eagles on March 27.

Both Breakers teams improved to 2-0 in league.

Event winners for the Laguna girls were: Tessa Hopper (100 meters); Brielle Budroe (200 meters, 1,600 meters); Johana Abarca (400 meters); Katie Greydon (800 meters); Eliza Romero (3,200 meters); Monica White (high jump).

Even winners for the Laguna boys were: Drake Martinez (100, 200 meters); Paul McCade (400 meters); Jack Crawford (1,600, 3,200 meters); Spencer Anderson (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Brenden Skinfill (long jump); Sam Wolgios (triple jump); Kyler Pike (high jump).

Laguna is scheduled to compete Friday at the Arcadia Invitational. The Breakers return to OCL meet action Thursday hosting Calvary Chapel at 3 p.m.

Boys’ Volleyball

In a battle for first place in the Orange Coast League, the Breakers took sole possession of the top spot by sweeping visiting Calvary Chapel, 25-16, 25-14, 25-14, on March 28 at Dugger Gym.

Senior opposite Jackson Pries led a balanced attack with eight kills. Senior outside hitter Weston Barnes had six kills and three aces, and junior outside hitter Alec Wulff and junior middle blocker Noah Blanton both had five kills.

Junior setter/libero JP Wollam led the team in digs with seven. Junior libero Jake Hexberg had six digs and senior setter Grifan Fair had 30 assists.

The win put Laguna, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, at 3-0 in league and 8-3 overall. By sweeping the Eagles, the Breakers have now won 95 league sets in a row dating to the 2009 season. They improved to 22-1 all-time in their best of five series with Calvary Chapel, and now have won 41 consecutive league matches.

Calvary Chapel, which fell to 2-1 in league and 16-4 overall, is the only team to hand Laguna an OCL match loss, having done so in a five-set victory in 2008.

The Breakers are in Hawaii this week for the Kamehameha Cup, which started Thursday. The tournament runs through Saturday.

Laguna next week resumes Orange Coast League play with a 5:30 p.m. home match on Tuesday against Godinez.

Swimming

The Laguna boys’ and girls’ teams both went to 2-0 in Orange Coast League action by winning at Estancia on March 27. The boys’ team won, 125-45, and the girls’ team won, 140-27.

The Breakers next compete Wednesday against Calvary Chapel beginning at 3:15 p.m. at the Laguna pool.

Laguna is 4-8 overall and 2-3 in league.
