Masukawa named second-team All-Southern Section

Laguna Beach High’s Tyler Masukawa was given a postseason honor this week by being named to the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches’ Assn. 2010-11 All-Southern Section Division 4A Team. The junior guard is one of 10 players named to the second-team.

He joins senior Chris Joseph of Whittier Christian, seniors Gerard Rivers and Christian Sveiven of Paraclete, sophomore Brad Amburgey of Big Bear, senior German Pompa of La Puente, senior Kishon Sanders of La Salle, sophomore KJ Harris of Morningside, sophomore Mike Peters of Covina and junior Edward Griley of Morro Boy.

Breakers baseball holds down at No. 4

The Laguna Beach baseball team, which last week set a new school record for wins in a single season, is again ranked fourth in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 4 rankings. The Breakers are in the fourth spot for a second-straight week in a poll again topped by No. 1 Bishop Amat. Palm Desert and Oaks Christian are second and third and following Laguna is Torrance, Chino, Indio, Troy, Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana and La Quinta/La Quinta.

Like its baseball counterpart, both the Laguna boys’ volleyball and boys’ tennis teams held down their respective rankings.

Laguna’s boys’ volleyball team remained No. 2 behind top-ranked Corona del Mar in the Division 2 poll. Valencia/Valencia, Oak Park, Trabuco Hills, Oaks Christian, Beckman, San Luis Obispo, El Toro and Aliso Niguel complete the top 10.

The boys’ tennis team is No. 3, in the Division 4 poll. Viewpoint is ranked first and is followed by Paramount, Laguna, Santa Ynez, Westminster, La Quinta/Westminster, Cate, Dunn, Segerstrom and Linfield Christian.

Local player wins tennis tourney

Sydney Van Alphen of Laguna Beach played an age group up at the Woodbridge Spring Junior Open last weekend on won the girls’ 14s division. Despite playing up, the 11-year-old, who normally plays girls 12s, was the top-seed in the girls’ 14s event.

She defeated Libby Jubas of Irvine (6-1, 6-0) in the quarterfinals, Shreya Kumar of Irvine (6-0, 6-1) in the semifinals and took the first-place trophy by sweeping 14-year-old Catherine Kreslin of Poway, the division’s No. 2-seed, 6-1, 6-1, in the final.

Lawn bowling event is May 7

The Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club will hold an open house event, “Saturday On The Green,” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7 at the club (455 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach). The open house includes free lessons, games, food and other activities.
