The Breakers repeated as Orange Coast League champion after defeating host Costa Mesa, 11-7, on Tuesday. They improved to 7-0 in league and wrapped up league play Thursday against Saddleback. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Morgan Lebby played two sets at No. 1 singles for the Breakers and won both. Zach Pratto also played and won twice at No. 2 singles, and Andrew Koumas (6-4) and Tim Nguyen (6-4) each won a set at No. 3 singles.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers ran their Orange Coast League record to 7-0 Tuesday by sweeping visiting Calvary Chapel, 25-22, 25-19, 25-16. Laguna, ranked third in Division 2, also improved to 17-8 overall.

“Prior to the match, I talked to the guys about playing with a sense of urgency and they responded well,” Laguna Coach Scott Panaro said. “Calvary came out with a lot of fire and was serving tough, but our passing steadied and we were able to control the ball better as the match progressed. This gave us lots of opportunity to score.

“Weston Barnes (19 kills) had a strong offensive game and JP Wollam came off the bench to give us a spark with several tough serves and great backcourt play. Overall, I am pleased with (tonight’s) performance and hope we continue to improve and stay healthy.”

Austin Hillemann finished with 12 kills, Jake Hexburg had 13 digs and Grifan Fair added 35 assists.

In a nonleague match between ranked teams, Laguna was swept at Dana Hills on April 20. The Dolphins, ranked seventh in Division 1, emerged with a 26-24, 25-18, 28-26 victory. Barnes had 17 kills, Hillemann 10 kills, Hexburg and Jack Winn each had 11 digs and Fair had eight digs and 37 assists.

Laguna played Godinez on Thursday but the score wasn’t available at press time. The Breakers close out their league and regular-season schedules next week with a Monday match at Costa Mesa, followed by a Wednesday home contest against Saddleback.
