Surf art rules at AR4T gallery

AR4T Gallery continues its Girls vs. Boys: The Summer of Love series with surf-inspired art from Drew Brophy and Karlee Mackie.

The series lasts all summer long and showcases work from different male-female partnerships, according a news release.

Brophy is “the world’s most-recognized surf lifestyle artist of the 21st century,” according to the release. He also stars in the television show “The Paint Shop.”

Mackie is a sponsored surfer who competes on tour as she develops her artistic abilities.

An opening reception for the artists will be from 7 to 10 p.m. July 29 at the gallery, 210 N. Coast Hwy. An after party will be held at Ocean Avenue Restaurant and Brewery, 237 Ocean Ave.

Making art to wear and share at Sawdust

Grab your gal pals and a little creativity and head to “Girls’ Nite Out” — a series of art classes at 6 p.m. Mondays through the end of the Sawdust Art Festival season.

The two-hour classes are taught by professional instructors, some of whom are exhibiting at Sawdust this year.

There are five classes left:

Make a tidepool bracelet with Linda Ames on Monday; enjoy pendant making with David Farris on Aug. 1; take chain making with Annette Doreng-Stearns on Aug. 8; knit or crochet beaded flowers with Helen McNamara on Aug. 15; and create fused glass origami bowls with Maggie Spencer on Aug. 22.

Group show is at Wendt Gallery

The Decennium exhibit continues through Aug. 7 at the Wendt Gallery, 1550 S. Coast Hwy.

The show celebrates the gallery’s 10th anniversary and is features the work of more than 50 contemporary American artists. A portion of the sales will go to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.

The Wendt Gallery was established in Laguna Beach in 2001, and it has expanded to New York, Singapore and Vienna.

Jazz Wednesday with Club Django

Laguna Beach Live! will present Club Django from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 3 in the outdoor Rose Garden of the Hotel Laguna, 425 S. Coast Hwy.

The group’s music is based off of Belgian guitarist Django Reinhardt, who created a new musical sound that included swing, jazz, French and gypsy styles in the 1930s and ‘40s. The group includes Joe Jewell, Don King, Roger Shew and Daniel Blank.

The Jazz Wednesday series continues with Joey Sellers & Eric Dries Quartet on Aug. 17; Sal Cracchiolo & Melanie Jackson Quartet on Aug. 31; and Luther Hughes & the Cannonball/Coltrane Project on Sept. 7.
