Ed Hardy film to screen at LAM

Laguna Art Museum will screen “Ed Hardy, Tattoo the World,” a new documentary about artist Ed Hardy, by filmmaker Emiko Omori on Sept. 22 at the museum. Hardy is currently part of the Art Shack exhibit at the museum, and both he and Omori will be present to answer questions and sign autographs during the screening.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception in the museum lobby, followed by the film at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 each on a first-come, first-served basis.

Jazz singer Karen Gallinger appears

Laguna Beach Live will present jazz vocalist Karen Gallinger from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the outdoor rose garden of the Hotel Laguna, 425 Coast Hwy.

Regarded as one of Southern California’s finest jazz singers, Gallinger has performed across the country, Europe and Asia. She is also a gifted composer and lyricist. She has opened for artists like Tony Bennett, Toni Tennille and Kenny Rankin, and also played the lead in the 1996 musical “Is It Just Me or Is It Hot in Here.”

‘Departures’ to be shown

The Laguna Beach Film Society will present “Departures,” a Japanese film about an out-of-work cellist who takes a job preparing the deceased for their entry into the next life, at 7 p.m. Thursday at South Coast Cinemas, 162 Coast Hwy.

Tickets are $15 at the door, or for just $5 more, you can enjoy a pre-film wine and hors d’oeuvres reception at 6 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Bank Community Room, 260 Ocean Ave.

Support for Sawdust film

Filmmakers Kailee McGee and Rich Costales will host a fundraising soiree from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at 805 Laguna Canyon Road to celebrate and raise money for “The Dust,” a documentary that takes an intimate look inside the Sawdust Art Festival’s 44th season.

The event will include hors d’oeuvres and wine, a silent auction of original artwork and jewelry from Sawdust artists and an array of gift certificates to local businesses, a premiere screening of the film, and live music by locals Sasha Evans and Douglas Miller.

Proceeds will go toward completing the documentary.

“So far the project has been 95% personally funded by the directors and unfortunately, we haven’t received as many monetary donations as expected,” McGee said.

She estimates that after the post-production wraps on Sept 22, it will take about two months to edit the film before the completed version screens in Laguna Beach and is submitted to film festivals nationwide.

‘Today’ at 210 AR4T

210 AR4T will feature “Today,” a group photography exhibit through Sept 26 at 210 N. Coast Hwy.

The show is a collection of prints embracing juxtapositions of individuals, nature, and culture. The work revolves around the current aspirations of each featured artist, including Adam Fedderly, Baldemar Fierro, Corey Arnold, Cheyenne Ellis, Jack Coleman, Jake Stangel, Lindsey Byrnes and Zapalac.

Boyle book is ‘Same Page’ selection

Latitude 33 Bookshop has selected “Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion,” by Father Gregory Boyle for its Laguna On The Same Page program.

“We are inviting the Laguna Beach community to read the book and join us for a presentation by Father Boyle,” according to a press statement from the bookstore. “We will be donating a portion of the book sales to Homeboy Industries.”

The bookstore will be partnering with the Laguna Presbyterian Church to host an evening with Father Boyle on Friday Nov. 5.

“Tattoos on the Heart” is a book of essays about the work Father Gregory Boyle has done to help Los Angeles area gang members through Homeboy Industries, which he founded in 1986. The organization is one of the largest gang intervention programs in the country, offering job training, tattoo removal, and employment.
