SILB member participates in Best Buddies ride

Doris McQuaid, a member of Soroptimist International of Laguna Beach, or SILB, and her husband rode their bikes 100 miles from Carmel to Hearst Castle last month in support of Best Buddies, an organization founded by the Shriver family to help those with emotional and developmental disabilities fit into society, a press release stated.

SILB designed a special pink polka-dot jersey, specifically for this event, for McQuaid to wear.

“I introduced myself and the Laguna Beach Soroptimist organization to Maria Shriver,” McQuaid said in a statement. “She was impressed with the Soroptimist mission of helping woman and children and grateful for the support for her Best Buddies fundraiser. “My husband and I raised $2,850 for this event.”

SILB’s mission works to improv the lives of women and girls locally and around the world.

Donations needed for Boutique Benefit

The Boutique Benefit is seeking donations for its collection drive being held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive.

Assistance League participating in book drive

The Assistance League of Laguna Beach is participating in the Children’s Community Book Drive’s “Make a Difference Day” Oct. 27.

The local chapter will be presenting books to Arthur Hasselbrink of Homefront America, the organization at Camp Pendelton’ Marine base that helps military families in need, according to a news release.

Gift made in honor of community member

The Laguna Beach Community Foundation received an undisclosed gift for its 2012 grants program in memory of Sue Gilbert, a Laguna Beach resident from 1973 to 1989, according to a news release.

The Newport Beach Book Club presented the donation to the foundation in honor of Gilbert’s love of the Laguna community.
