Briefly In Education: High school students picked for national art contest
Laguna Beach is sending the work of eight local high school students to the regional level of a national art competition.
The Laguna Beach High School Parent Teacher Assn. announced Sunday the winners of its annual Reflections national art contest. The students are the winners in their division out of a record number of participants.
The winners are:
Karina Parker for dance choreography; Austin Fickman for film; Molly McMillen and Moorea Howson for literature; Blake Allard for musical composition; Anika Larsen for photography; and Kevin Sasaki and Eric Curras for visual arts.
Several students were also honored with merit awards: Tyler Fisher for literature; Dreeana Blue and Iris Wang for photography; and Alexandra Eftimie, Kennedi Gherardini and Natalia Law for visual arts.
Honorable mentions went to: Nicole Doiron and Cory Kent for photography; and Emily Deremo, Alexandra Lindsay and Katie Silva-Grizzle for visual arts.
The Orange County Department of Education is hosting an open house gallery and reception for the winning entries from all Orange County districts from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 2 at Building A, 200 Kalmus Drive in Costa Mesa.

Sawdust hosts Girl Scouts for art class
Members of a Mission Viejo Girl Scout troop got to try their hand at being Sawdust Art Festival artists.
The Sawdust Art Festival hosted 13 girls from Girl Scout Troop 812 on Saturday for the troop’s annual educational arts trip. The girls had a two-hour workshop with Sawdust glass artist Patty Slowsky-Enfield. They learned how to create fused-glass holiday ornaments in the Healy House.
The troop also had the chance to explore the artwork on the Winter Fantasy grounds before spending the night at the Laguna Beach Girl Scout House on High Drive.
The trip was underwritten by the Sawdust Art Enrichment Fund, which supports hands-on programs to educate the public on art.
The public can explore the 22nd annual Winter Fantasy for themselves from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 9.
Admission is $6 for adults,$5 for seniors, $3 for children and free for children 5 and under.

Boys & Girls Club members participate in drug-free poster contest
A local nonprofit has chosen its 12 winners of an art contest that supports its mission to prevent drug and alcohol use.
Laguna Beach-based Brain Power honored 11 winners and one grand prize winner in its “Happy to be Alcohol and Drug Free” juried poster contest at an awards dinner Nov. 16 at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach.
The contest asked first- to seventh-grade students to paint pictures of what they enjoy doing. Students had to be members of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach and its TLC branch.
The submissions were judged in October by Laguna College of Art & design students Jordon Hammon, Vincent Kings, Stephanie Alexander and Rolendo Cruz-Tavra.
