Youth Scene: Girls complete perfect regular season

The Laguna Beach girls’ Division 2 National Junior Basketball team completed a perfect regular season Saturday by defeating visiting Lake Forest, 42-20, in weekend NJB play at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach.

The decisive victory allowed the Breakers to win the South County Division which includes teams from Capistrano Valley, El Toro, Lake Forest, Aliso Viejo and San Clemente.

Piper Naess led the scoring with 13 points, Izzy Meekma had nine points, Grace Gilles and Ella Dartez scored six points apiece, Avi Brice had four points, and Shanti Nunn, Pearl Sinclair and Jamie Mackay each scored two points.

Guard play and tough defense from Olivia Shipp and Amelie Sadler also aided the victory.

Breaker Mia Carpino didn’t play Saturday due to a knee injury.

Division 1

Laguna Beach 38, Laguna Hills 26: The Breakers ended the season on a winning note by turning back Laguna Hills. The Breakers trailed, 8-4, after one quarter but stormed back to win comfortably.

Laguna Beach received a big game from Sophia Lucas who scored 22 points, and Quinn Winter and Molly Cohn chipped in with six points each.

The Breakers will competed in the NJB Championship Series starting Saturday . The series concludes Feb. 22-23.

Boys’ Division 1

Laguna Beach Team 2 47, Laguna Hills Michigan 33: The Breakers jumped out to a 13-2 lead then withstood a strong rally by host Laguna Hills Michigan, to pull away to the win in the final game of the regular season.

Laguna Beach’s balanced scoring saw Dylan Miller and Noah Handel both score 13 points and Nicholas Lucas with 10 points. Joe Sweet was a force on the boards for the Breakers.

The Breakers start play in the NJB single-elimination postseason tournament Feb. 22 in Laguna Hills.

Boys’ Fifth-Grade All-Net

Laguna Beach 42, Anaheim Hills 37: Laguna finished the regular season with a five-point victory over the Comanches at East Anaheim Gym Sunday. Laguna completed an impressive, 8-6 overall record playing against the Top Tier teams in Orange County.

Strong defense and overall hustle was the trademark of a team composed of 10 Laguna Beach fifth-grade students: Ryan Anthony, Will Compton, Booker Frith, Griffin Kristensen, Henry Miller, Nolan Naess, Alex Neufeld, Jack Payne, Gavin Trevino and George Williams.

Laguna next will compete March 1-2 at the NJB All-Net sectional tournament in Garden Grove.
