Youth Scene: La Sirena Grill outlasts American Legion

La Sirena Grill outlasted American Legion, 8-4, in an extremely well played defensive game in which each team made six putouts in the field in Laguna Beach Little League AA Division action.

La Sirena relied on strong pitching efforts from Cade Anderton, who gave up two hits and struck out five in 2 2/3 innings, and Redmond Chesley, who had a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings pitched, plus the hitting of Anderton (single, run scored), Chesley (two for two, two RBIs, run scored), Jackson Baldwin (hit, two RBIs, run scored), Oliver Rounaghi (two for two, two runs), and Ben Dawson (home run, three RBIs).

The score was tied, 2-2, heading into the third inning when La Sirena scored five runs, thanks in large part to a tremendous, three-run homer by Dawson. La Sirena then held American Legion scoreless in the bottom-half of the inning.

Heading into the bottom of the fourth and final inning, La Sirena (7-3-1) held an 8-2 lead. American Legion rallied with three hits and a walk, to score two runs to put the score at 8-4 with two men on base. Chesley then struck out the next batter, and the game ended when Anderton made a diving stab of a line drive to first.

American Legion got solid pitching efforts from Taylor Towe (two innings, four hits, two runs) and Devon Connelly (1 2/3 innings, two hits, one run).

Luca Laurence (two for two, RBI, run scored), Sean Laird (hit, run scored), Jackson Hutcheon (two for two, RBI), and Jackson Byerly (hit, RBI) led American Legion’s offensive attack.

In Majors Division action:

Crescent Bay Advisors 5, Hobie 2

Caden Capobianco drove in the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning and Charlie Pillsbury gave a dominating, complete-game performance Wednesday, as Crescent Bay Advisors defeated Hobie.

Nolan Naess singled in the seventh and went to third base on a double by Jack Payne, the second double of the game for Payne who had a two-bagger in the fourth. Capobianco delivered a two-out single to right field to bring home Naess and Payne. Hayden Myers then singled home Capobianco for CBA’s third run of the inning.

Adam Kerfoot doubled to start a rally for Hobie in the opening inning which led to a 1-0 lead, and Hobie increased its lead to 2-0 before a two-run single by CBA’s Ayrton Garcia tied the score at 2-2.

Myers finished with two hits and Blake Perduk had a big single for CBA which improved to 6-5.

Pillsbury gave up only three hits, two earned runs, a walk and struck out 10 in seven innings.

Hobie was led by the 5 very good innings of pitching by Jeremy Hayes threw five, good innings and Lance Detweiler was strong in relief in the final two innings for Hobie.
