Boys’ Tennis: Breakers reach second round

Singles player Ryan Gee and the doubles team of Alex Duong and Ethan Gee represented Laguna Beach High at the CIF Southern Section Boys’ Individual Tennis Regionals May 29 at Corona del Mar High.

In his first match of the tournament, Ryan Gee, singles champion from the Orange Coast League, dropped his first set (3-6) against Tri Luong of Garden Grove (Garden Grove League No. 2) but pulled out 7-5, 12-10 wins in the final two sets of a tight first-round match to advance.

Gee met South Coast League singles champion Chase Mascorini in the second round and Mascorini, who had a first-round bye, defeated Gee by scores of 6-0, 6-1, to move on to the Round of 32 Thursday at Whittier Narrows Tennis Center.

In the doubles tournament, Duong/Ethan Gee, the doubles team champion from the Orange Coast League, came back from a set down to Peter Marquez/Alex Reyes of San Dimas (Valle Vista League No. 2) to score a 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 win in their first match. The Breakers duo was eliminated in the second round by the team of Minsong Hsu/Kenny Sakata of Diamond Bar, doubles champion from the Hacienda League. Hsu/Sakata, who had a first-round bye, won the match, 6-3, 6-1.
