Briefs: Skimboard event coming

The 2013 Victoria Skimboards World Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday at Aliso Beach in Laguna Beach.

The contest gets underway at 8 a.m. Saturday with competition in the 8-and-under division. Amateur divisions competitions follow, and the Professional Women and Men divisions will run when best conditions are available during both days.

"The VIC," as it is known, is in its 37th year and will be broadcast live on the Internet.

Pitz takes third at NSSA championships

Taylor Pitz of Laguna Beach, a student at UCLA, earned a third-place individual placement in the College Women's division at the 2013 National Scholastic Surfing Assn. National Interscholastic Championships June 17 at Salt Creek in Dana Point.

Pitz helped UCLA take seventh place in the National College Championships. San Diego St.-Black won the team title.

Volleyball Camp

Junior Breakers Summer Volleyball Camp is a grass-root youth organization focused on teaching young athletes the basic fundamentals and strategies of volleyball using the techniques and philosophies taught at Laguna Beach High School.

Camps will be held between 4 and 6 p.m. daily the weeks of July 8-11, July 15-18, July 29-Aug. 1, Aug. 5-8 and Aug. 19-22.

Participants will receive instruction from current Laguna Beach High School boys' volleyball head coach Scott Panaro, additional Laguna Beach High volleyball staff members and current players.

Baseball camps to open

A pair of baseball camps will start in July at Laguna Beach High.

The Youth Baseball Camp is available for students grades fifth through 12th. The second camp, an Incoming Freshman Camp, is open to middle school and freshmen students. Both camps will run sessions between 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week beginning July 9 at the school's baseball field. The camps run through July 25.

Boys' volleyball camp for high school players

Designed for incoming freshmen through 12th-grade players, Laguna Beach High School Volleyball Summer Camp starts in August.

The Freshman-Senior camps will take place between 4 to 7 p.m. daily the weeks of Aug. 5-8, Aug. 12-15 and Aug. 19-22.

The camp is designed to help incoming players, with no or limited experience or have not played on a previous boys' volleyball team at Laguna Beach, to become more familiar with game skills and rules.

Returning players will continue to develop their skills and participate in game play.

The camp will be instructed by Laguna Beach High boys' varsity head coach Scott Panaro, members of the Laguna coaching staff, and current collegiate players.
