Laguna Youth Baseball Camp

The Youth Baseball Camp for incoming freshmen at Laguna Beach High is underway at Skipper Carrillo Field. The camp is running daily from 5 to 7 p.m. through July 30.

USA wins gold at Pan Am Games

The USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team won the gold medal Tuesday at Toronto, Canada. The team includes Makenzie Fischer of Laguna Beach.

In the gold medal match, Team USA defeated Canada, 13-4. The win capped an undefeated run for the team, which previously cruised to victories over Mexico (25-3), Cuba (18-3) and Argentina (30-3) in group pool play, and Brazil (16-3) in the semifinals. Fischer scored single goals against Mexico and Brazil, three against Cuba, and five against Argentina.

In the Pan American Games Men’s tournament in Toronto, Team USA edged Canada Monday, 9-8, to advance to the gold medal game, and in the process clinched a berth to the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Laguna girls’ volleyball clinics

Two youth girls’ volleyball clinics run by Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball Coach Raul Papaleo start Aug. 3.

The clinics are open to youth grades fifth through eighth (2015-16 school year) and run through Aug. 13 at the Laguna Beach High gymnasium.

The VIC dates set

Some of the top riders both locally and across the globe will be in Laguna Beach this summer for the 2015 World Championships of Skimboarding. The 39th edition of The VIC will take place Aug. 29-30 at Aliso Beach.

Past competitions have drawn riders from such countries as Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, The Philippines, Chile and Spain. The VIC is the longest-running contest in skimboarding.
