Briefs: High school boys’ volleyball camps to start

Designed for incoming freshmen through 12th-grade players, Laguna Beach High School Volleyball Summer Camp starts with its first weekly session Monday.

The camp runs between 4 to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday.

The freshman-senior camps also are offered the weeks of Aug. 12-15 and Aug. 19-22.

The camp is designed to help incoming players, with no or limited experience or have not played on a previous boys’ volleyball team at Laguna Beach, to become more familiar with game skills and rules.

Returning players will continue to develop their skills and participate in game play.

The camp will be instructed by Laguna Beach High boys’ varsity head coach Scott Panaro, members of the Laguna coaching staff, and current collegiate players.

Junior Breakers volleyball camp is Monday

Junior Breakers Summer Volleyball Camp is a grass-root youth organization focused on teaching young athletes the basic fundamentals and strategies of volleyball using the techniques and philosophies taught at Laguna Beach High.

The next camp session starts Monday and ends Thursday. The final camp session of the summer is Aug. 19-22.

Participants will receive instruction from current Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball head coach Scott Panaro, additional Laguna Beach High volleyball staff members and current players.

Dries, Team USA to play for fifth place

Annika Dries (Laguna Beach) scored two goals Wednesday and the USA Water Polo Women’s Senior Team edged the Netherlands, 12-11, at the FINA World Championships at Barcelona, Spain.

In a close game throughout, Dries scored off a set up from Jillian Kraus (Santa Ana) to give Team USA a 2-1 lead less than three minutes into the match. She scored her other goal with four minutes to go to halftime which tied the score at 4-4.

Team USA will meet Greece for fifth place Friday. The teams met in the opening match of the tournament, a game won by Team USA, 12-8.
