Briefs: Lifeguards to compete again
Laguna Beach lifeguards are putting their skills to the test once again this week at the Nautica United States Lifesaving Assn. National Lifeguard Championships at Manhattan Beach.
More than 1,000 lifeguards and Junior Lifeguards were expected to compete in team and individual ocean and beach course events. The Lifeguard National Championships run daily starting at 8 a.m. through Saturday.
The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Assn. has won the title 39 times in the 43-year history of the event including the last 26 national competitions.
The competition started Thursday and runs through Saturday.

“This is the granddaddy of all lifeguard competitions bringing the best of the best from across the country,” Ed Zebrowski, Competition Committee Chair for the USLA, said in a statement. “It’s a fun-filled three days of action with competition and sponsor booths at one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.”
At the 31st annual California Surf Life Saving Championships at the Newport Beach Pier last week, Laguna Beach Lifeguard Assn. won the B division team championship and finished third in the overall division (A, B) standings.

Dries, Team USA fifth at World Championships
The USA Women’s National Water Polo Team finished took fifth place at the FINA World Championships at Barcelona, Spain.
Team USA got past Greece, 15-12, in a shootout Aug. 2 in the fifth-place game.
Annika Dries (Laguna Beach) scored one goal for Team USA. She netted a shot from inside with 1:42 remaining in the opening quarter. Her score gave the U.S. its first lead of the match at 4-3.
Dries had scored two goals in Team USA’s previous match July 31, a 12-11 victory against the Netherlands.
Team USA also defeated Greece, 12-8, in a tournament opener and finished the FINA World Championship with a 6-1 record.

Next high school boys’ volleyball camps starts Monday
The third of four Laguna Beach High Volleyball Summer Camps starts Monday at Dugger Gym.
The camp, designed for incoming freshmen through 12th-grade players, runs between 4 to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday.
The freshman-senior camps also will run one final time from Aug. 19-22.
The camp is designed to help incoming players, with no or limited experience or have not played on a previous boys’ volleyball team at Laguna Beach, to become more familiar with game skills and rules.
Returning players will continue to develop their skills and participate in game play.
The camp will be instructed by Laguna Beach High boys’ varsity head coach Scott Panaro, members of the Laguna coaching staff, and current collegiate players.

Junior Breakers volleyball camp upcoming
Junior Breakers Summer Volleyball Camp, a grass-root youth organization focused on teaching young athletes the basic fundamentals and strategies of volleyball using the techniques and philosophies taught at Laguna Beach High, will hold its next session Aug. 19-22.
Participants will receive instruction from current Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball head coach Scott Panaro, additional Laguna Beach High volleyball staff members and current players.
