Whalen, Dicterow claim council seats

With all precincts reporting late Tuesday night, Planning Commissioner Bob Whalen and former City Councilman Steve Dicterow were the top vote-getters for the two open seats on the Laguna Beach City Council.

According to data from the Orange County Registrar of Voters, at midnight Whalen led all five candidates with 4,583 votes, or 27.5%. Dicterow had 4,339 votes, or 26.1%.

Council incumbents Verna Rollinger and Jane Egly were in third and fourth place, each with about 21% of the vote.

Newcomer Robert Ross snagged 634 votes, or 3.8%.

In the race for Laguna Beach Unified School District board, Jan Vickers and Bill Landsiedel held the top two spots Tuesday night, with 35.8% and 25.8% of the votes, respectively.

Measure CC, the so-called Open Space Initiative, was set to be defeated with a no vote of 55.9%.
