Made to Measure

Need some plaid, toile or reindeer-patterned home dec fabric for an upcoming sewing or crafting project? There are two excellent resources in the area.

The Home Fabrics (a.k.a. the $2 Fabric Outlet) at 2320 S. Bristol St., Santa Ana, at Warner Avenue, is your best bet for a huge range of basic home dec-weight fabric; be warned, hardly anything is really $2 a yard, but the deals still can’t be beat. If you really want the cheap stuff, check out the $1.99 section in a back room, which offers random patterns. The outlet is the larger counterpart to a pricier store in Lake Forest. Call (714) 979-3545.

For extremely high-quality bolts, visit the Dorell Fabric Outlet at 10870 Spencer Ave., Fountain Valley, where fabric that retails for up to $80 a yard can be found for up to 70% off — yes, including Dorell’s excellent micro suede offerings. Just need a remnant, or the end of a bolt? The savings are even steeper. Call (714) 378-3116.
