College Roundup: UCI’s Jock wins 800 at Big West finals

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Charles Jock reclaimed the Big West title in the 800 meters, but not my much, Saturday at Anteater Stadium.

Jock won the race in a conference, meet and stadium record time of 1 minute, 44.75 seconds in another epic duel with UC Santa Barbara’s Ryan Martin, who was the runner-up in 1:44.77. Those times presently rank 1-2 in the collegiate and U.S. ranks this season.

Martin defeated Jock by .06 in the conference meet a year ago, and after four years, they each have two Big West 800 titles (Jock in 2012 and 2010, Martin in 2011 and 2009).

UCI senior Jacob Yowell won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.00 and he was runner-up in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.9.

Jock and Yowell were members of the UCI 4x400 relay that took first place in 3:11.17. Dominic Jester ran the opening leg, Jock the second, Chris Carson the third, and Yowell the anchor leg.

The Anteater men finished seventh in the team competition with 69 points as UC Santa Barbara won its first Big West men’s title with 179.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Stanford 12, UC Irvine 3

SAN DIEGO — The No. 4-seeded Anteaters dropped to 25-7 after losing to the top-seeded Cardinal in a semifinal of the NCAA Championship Saturday at Aztec Aquaplex.

Jessy Cardey, the two-time Big West Player of the Year, scored, as did Hannah Croghan and Kelsey Klatt.

Stanfor goalie Kate Baldoni, a Corona del Mar High product had nine saves.

Stanford (25-2) will face No. 3 seed USC (23-5) in the final. UCI plays against second-seeded UCLA (22-4) in the third-place game Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Big West Championships

IRVINE — UC Irvine junior Ericka Nowell won the 400-meter hurdles in 58.76 and senior teammate Amber Middleton was second with a time of 59.66.

Middleton finished as runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.74. Wharton, Middleton, Collins and Nowell ran the legs of the 4x400 relay as the Anteaters finished second in 3:42.25, breaking the school record of 3:42.69 they had set 13 days earlier.

Freshman Itos Aikhionbare finished third in the shot put with a mark of 43-10 ¾ and freshman Jessica Imani, a Corona del Mar High product, set the school record in the hammer throw with a sixth-place toss of 165-2.

The Anteater women finished seventh with 59 points in the team competition. UC Davis won the championship with 170 points.

BASEBALL

Cal State Northridge 7,UC Irvine 1

NORTHRIDGE — The Anteaters (28-19, 12-8 in the Big West Conference) sit in third in the conference after losing Saturday.

Pitcher Crosby Slaught allowed three runs on one hit in three innings to fall to 6-5.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
