Briefs: Ex-’Eater demoted

The Miami Marlins optioned former UC Irvine baseball standout Bryan Petersen to the Triple-A New Orleans Zephers on Friday.

Petersen, an outfielder, hit .212 in 52 at-bats spanning 22 games this season for the Marlins. He had two runs batted in and one stolen base.

In parts of three seasons win the Marlins, Petersen has a .239 batting average in 280 at-bats and 119 games. He has two career homers and 14 RBIs in the major leagues.

Petersen helped UCI reach the College World Series in 2007.

Pair of All-Americans

Vanguard University senior Lucas Pereira was named first-team NAIA All-American, while freshman teammate Roger Muri was a second-team honoree.

Pereira, from San Paulo, Brazil, was No. 11 in the NAIA-ITA singles rankings and No. 8 in doubles. He was 13-12 in singles as a senior, helping the Lions finish 15-11 and advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Tournament. The three-time All-Golden State Athletic Conference performer was 15-11 in 2012 with four doubles partners.

Muri, from Switzerland, was 13-5 at No. 2 singles and 4-2 at No. 3 singles in his collegiate debut. He posted a 15-11 doubles record with three doubles partners.
