Briefs: Marlins recall Petersen

Former UC Irvine baseball outfielder Bryan Petersen was recalled by the Miami Marlins on Tuesday and went hitless in three at-bats with a walk and a stolen base in the Marlins’ 7-1 home loss to Atlanta on Wednesday.

Petersen, a member of UCI’s College World Series team in 2007, was hitting .321 with three home runs, 28 runs batted in and eight stolen bases in 243 at-bats with the Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs.

It’s his second stint this season with the Marlins, for whom he is batting .200 with two RBIs and two stolen bases in 55 at-bats.

UCI players shine

UC Irvine baseball player Jerry McClanahan played in the West Coast League All-Star Game on Tuesday, while UCI teammate Jordan Sparks won the Home Run Derby that preceded the game in Walla Walla, Wash.

McClanahan, a catcher representing the East, walked twice in two plate-appearances in a 3-2 loss to the West. A freshman last season at UCI, McClanahan is hitting .293 with four home runs and 11 runs batted in in 75 at-bats for the Kelowna Falcons, based in British Columbia, Canada.

Sparks, who is hitting .346 with four homers and 11 RBIs for the Wenatchee (Wash.) AppleSox, hit seven homers in the first round of the exhibition event. Sparks, who will be a sophomore in the fall, then defeated Austin Byler in the final and finished with 11 homers.

Chai follows Speraw

Rob Chai, a statistician for the UC Irvine men’s volleyball program the last 10 years, will accompany former Anteaters Coach John Speraw to UCLA, where he will perform the same duties.

Chai, an Arcadia resident, is a childhood friend of Speraw. Chai volunteered his services when Speraw became UCI’s coach in 2003.

Estancia hoops camp

Estancia High boys’ basketball coach Agustin Heredia has his 2012 Summer Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 5-14 on July 30 to Aug. 3.

Heredia, who led Estancia to a CIF Southern Section Division 3-AA title as a player in 1989-90, will run the camp at the school with his coaching staff.

The camp will focus on improving players shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding and defense.

The camp is $50 per child and registration begins on-site on July 30. The address at Estancia is 2323 Placentia Avenue.

The hours for each day of the camp will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
