Hawaii kind to Sailors

The Newport Harbor High girls’ volleyball team has reeled off five straight wins in the Ann Kang Tournament on Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Sailors, who won their pool with three wins Thursday, earned two straight victories Friday to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals at ‘Iolani High. The semifinals and final will also be played Saturday.

Newport Harbor will play against Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the quarterfinals.

Newport Harbor beat Mid-Pacific Institute of Oahu to begin Friday’s action, 25-15, 25-17. The Sailors then defeated Maryknoll High of Honolulu, 25-20, 25-11, in the best-of-three format.

Senior-to-be Cinnamon Sary, who has verbally committed to USC, has played setter for the Sailors the past two years earning Daily Pilot Dream Team honors both seasons. At the Ann Kang Tournament, Sary is Newport Harbor’s outside hitter. She led the Sailors with 14 kills total from both matches.

Kasey Thompson, an incoming senior, had eight kills in the two wins.

Torey Thompson, a junior-to-be and Kasey’s younger sister, recorded 35 assists as Newport Harbor’s setter.

Alex Holbrook, an incoming senior back from a serious knee injury last year, had seven kills. Carol Bockrath, who will be a sophomore, had six kills, and Claire Castillo, an incoming senior, added five kills.

Senior-to-be Tatum Norton had nine digs, and junior-to-be Hunter Jennings contributed eight aces and three digs.
