Youth Scene: Axton doubles up

Share

Willy Axton of Costa Mesa won both the OC Fair “Challenge in the Dirt” race as well as the Orange County Grand Prix, held in the West lot at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

The dirt event was held in the Speedway Action Sports Arena during the opening weekend of the OC Fair in July. The Grand Prix was two weeks ago.

Of the six people eligible to double up at both events Axton was the only competitor to do so. He was victorious in the junior class at both events. The 11-year-old moved up early this season into the junior class, a class for competitors ages 13 to 16 years old.

Axton is a sixth-grader at Kaiser Elementary in Costa Mesa.

“I’m proud to represent my hometown at these races that were held in our own backyard,” Axton said. “I look forward to defending my title at next year’s events.”

Axton competes in a 125cc go-kart that is capable of speeds over 90 mph. In his first year as a junior, Axton has captured second place in the Pro-Kart South Regional Championship, one of the most competitive series in the country.

With a good finish in the upcoming Grange Motor Circuit he will also capture second place in the International Karting Federation Western Regional Championship, also a huge accomplishment for an 11-year-old, sixth-grader racing with high school kids.

“I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to my coaches, team, sponsors, friends and family, and especially mom and dad,” Axton said. “Without the help of these people I would not have had the success or opportunities I have had this year.”
