Jack’s Surfboards in Corona del Mar lost more than $1,600 worth of merchandise in a weekend theft, the second in three months, police said Tuesday.

Sometime between 3:30 and 7:15 p.m. Sunday, 36 items of clothing were taken after their sensors and tags were removed, according to Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.

Employees at the business, at 900 Avocado Ave., did not immediately notice the loss, Manzella said.

In the earlier incident, police responding to the store in the early hours of April 30 found the front door smashed in, Manzella said, adding it appeared that a granite table top was used to break into the business. Two display cases were pried open and watches and cameras were taken, she said.

In that incident, which caused $2,500 in damage to the store, the stolen merchandise totaled $13,000.

Police said there is no indication the two incidents are related.
