Around Town: Curious about curling? Lessons offered at Irvine Spectrum Center

To help introduce people to its sport, the Orange County Curling Club plans to teach curling basics during four free public exhibitions at the Irvine Spectrum Center’s OC Chill Ice Rink, starting Saturday.

The sessions are scheduled from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 and 21 and Dec. 5.

Instructors will teach novice curlers 10 and older how to properly slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area, using techniques of Olympic curlers.

The curling club says it has more than 70 members who curl year-round at Westminster Ice.

‘Knot-a-thon’ to make caps for veterans Saturday

Knots of Love, a Costa Mesa-based nonprofit, will present a “knot-a-thon” on Saturday in Costa Mesa to knit caps for military veterans.

The event will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Estancia Park, 1900 Adams Ave.

Yarn will be provided.

Document shredding offered Saturday in Newport Beach

Newport Beach residents who receive trash and recycling service from CR&R can dispose of unwanted documents at a free shredding event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of Mariners Elementary School, 2100 Mariners Drive, Newport Beach.

Among the items that will be accepted are those containing personal or sensitive information, including bank, credit card and financial statements, tax forms, checks, bills, old credit cards and junk mail.

Part of Newport dog park to be closed for upgrades

The upper north end of the Newport Beach Civic Center Dog Park will be closed for renovations from Monday through Nov. 21. It will reopen at 8 a.m. Nov. 22, according to the city.

Additions will include a small-dog area with a separate entrance, a new water fountain and new main entrance gates.

WomanSage awards dinner Tuesday in Costa Mesa

WomanSage, an Irvine-based nonprofit that supports women facing transitions and difficult circumstances, will recognize 12 community and business leaders at its annual Family Matters awards dinner on Tuesday at the Center Club in Costa Mesa.

Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett will be the keynote speaker, and Newport Beach musician Jim Roberts will perform.

The evening will begin with a silent auction and reception from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards program. Tickets are $50, which includes the dinner and valet parking.

Stanbridge College recognized as a School of Excellence

Stanbridge College, based in Irvine, has been named a 2014-15 School of Excellence by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.

Stanbridge and 23 other schools were honored from among the 800 institutions the commission accredits.

The college, founded in 1996, offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing and other health fields. It houses a canine patient simulator, a synthetic human cadaver lab and other training and simulation clinics.

Ex-chief of naval operations speaks at Vanguard University event

More than 200 business and municipal leaders, community members, students, professors and alumni attended the inaugural Larson Lectureship on Ethics and Business on Oct. 26 at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa.

The event, presented by the university’s department of business and management, featured a speech by retired Adm. Vern Clark, a former chief of naval operations and former Vanguard University trustee.

Visitors from Antibes, France, mark 25 years as Newport’s sister city

Eighteen people from Antibes, France, visited sister city Newport Beach last week to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the cities’ relationship.

The Antibes delegation reportedly made several stops around Newport, including a French class at Newport Harbor High School, a performance by the Corona del Mar High School madrigal singers and a City Council study session that featured a proclamation in honor of the sister city program.

Movember poker fundraiser to support men’s health

Team Nuclear, a local Movember team, will have a poker tournament fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at 425 30th St. in Newport Beach.

Admission starts at $50.

Money raised will help support the Movember Foundation, which promotes men’s health.
