College Roundup: UC falls to Loyola in five sets

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Loyola of Chicago def. UC Irvine

PROVO, Utah — The No. 3-ranked Anteaters were bested by the No. 3-ranked Ramblers, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 26-28, 15-9, on Saturday at the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. Showcase at BYU.

Junior outside hitter Tamir Hershko led UCI (1-1) with 15 kills, while senior middle blocker Jason Agopian had 10 kills and hit .643 for the ‘Eaters.

Junior setter Michael Saeta had 29 assists and Hershko led the team with 13 digs.

Senior outside hitter Kyle Russell had 10 kills and three aces, though he hit .036 and UCI hit .171 as a team, 145 points worse than the Ramblers, who defeated UCI in the NCAA semifinals last season on their way to their second straight NCAA title.

UCI plays host to No. 5-ranked UCLA on Friday at 7 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

William Jessup 99, Vanguard 92

Jaamon Echols had 33 points and Zach Allmon added 14 points and nine rebounds for the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

No. 24-ranked Vanguard (11-3, 1-2 in conference) shot 53.2% from the field, but the visitors shot 61.1% and earned a 37-27 rebounding edge.

Allmon made 10 of 14 field-goal attempts, but was four for nine from the foul line.

Echols was 10 for 18 from the field, and made 13 of 16 free-throw attempts.

The unranked visitors are 10-5, 2-2.

Vanguard plays host to La Sierra in a nonconference game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 62, William Jessup 42

Melissa Norman had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Samantha Doucette added 19 points for the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

The No. 12-ranked Lions (9-3, 2-1 in conference) trailed, 11-9, at the end of one quarter, but outscored the visitors, 22-5, in the second quarter to take command.

Claire Lamunu had 12 rebounds and nine points for Vanguard, which shot just 27.9% from the field (23 for 83), including just two for 21 from three-point range.

The Lions forced 23 turnovers and limited the visitors (11-4, 2-2) to nine foul shots.

Vanguard plays host to Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Cal Poly SLO 72, UC Irvine 54

Senior Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had 14 points and five assists to lead the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

UCI shot 28.1% from the field (18 for 64) and was outrebounded, 55-40.

The Anteaters (3-13, 0-2 in conference) have lost eight in a row.

Cal Poly is 8-7, 1-1.

UCI is at UC Davis on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
