Briefs: UCI’s Jalam wins golf event in Sacramento

UC Irvine sophomore Ramiz Jamal earned the title of the 92nd California State Fair Men’s Amateur Championship that concluded Sunday at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento.

Jamal won the championship by three shots, shooting a six-under-par 66 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 13-under 203 (69-68-66), three shots better than the runner-up.

Jamal, a Marina High graduate, is entering his second season with the Anteaters, who open the 2016-17 schedule Oct. 3-4 in the Nick Watney Invitational at San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.

He played in three tournaments during his freshman season at UCI.

Two Lions lauded

Vanguard University goalkeeper Brandon Gomez and forward Ivan Azpeita have been named Golden State Athletic Conference defensive and offensive players of the week, respectively, in men’s soccer.

Gomez, a two-time All-GSAC honoree, had a pair of shutouts as the Lions topped La Sierra and No. 8-ranked Rocky Mountain College in nonconference home games Tuesday and Friday.

Gomez, a junior, blocked a penalty kick against RMC and totaled five saves for the week.

Azpeita, a senior, had a goal and an assist in the 2-0 triumph over La Sierra. He added an assist in the 4-0 victory over RMC.

Lions’ Bruce shines

Vanguard University sophomore defender Haley Bruce was named Golden State Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer.

Bruce scored on a free kick in overtime for the game-winner in a 1-0 triumph over Rocky Mountain College on Friday at home.

Vanguard is 2-2 heading into Wednesday’s nonconference home game against Pomona-Pitzer.

Locals in AVP

Huntington Beach residents Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson (men’s) as well as Costa Mesa resident Jennifer Fopma and her partner (women’s) finished fifth to highlight locals competing in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ Championships, the beach volleyball tour’s final event of the season completed Sunday in Chicago.

Newport Harbor High product April Ross, playing with Kelly Reeves as Ross’ typical partner Kerri Walsh Jennings boycotted the event over a dispute about coordinating rules changes, was seventh in the women’s event.

Another former Sailor, Ty Tramblie, finished seventh in the men’s event with partner Stafford Slick.

Fopma played with Emily Stockman.

UC Irvine product Whitney Pavlik and partner Amanda Dowdy earned a ninth-place women’s finish.
