College Roundup: UCI men’s basketball moves to 8-3 in Big West

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 72, Hawaii 58

HONOLULU — Senior Luke Nelson scored a season-high 29 points to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game late Saturday night.

Nelson tied his career best with six three-pointers to help UCI (15-12, 8-3 in conference) end Hawaii’s four-game winning streak and stay one-half game behind first-place UC Davis.

Ioannis Dimakopoulos had 11 points and five rebounds for the ‘Eaters, who posted a 22-0 edge in bench scoring and had a 39-22 rebounding advantage.

Hawaii is 12-12, 6-5.

Biola 75, Vanguard 68

LA MIRADA — Victor Evans had 17 points to lead the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Tuesday.

Brandon Hood had 13 points, while Kwinn Hanson had 11 points (on five-for-six shooting from the field) and seven rebounds for Vanguard (6-21, 4-9 in conference).

No. 6-ranked and first-place Biola is 25-3, 11-3.

Fullerton 96, Orange Coast 50

Kamar Reese had 12 points to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference and regular-season finale on Tuesday.

OCC is 8-19, 1-11 in conference.

Fullerton is 21-6, 10-1.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 8, Long Beach 1

Sophomore shortstop Travis Moniot hit a home run and two doubles, while John Balliet was three for four with three runs batted in and Walker Keller homered and drove in three runs to lead the host Pirates in the nonconference game Tuesday.

McKinley LeFore did not allow an earned run in 7 2/3 innings to improve to 2-0 for the 7-0 Pirates.

Ryan Randel did not allow a hit or a run in 1 1/3 innings to earn his first save.

Long Beach is 4-3.

Golden West 6, Cerritos 2

Junior Aguilar was three four four with three runs driven in to lead the host Rustlers in the nonconference game on Monday.

Kenny Carrillo worked 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for Golden West (4-4).

Cerritos is 2-4.

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard swept on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep of William Jessup in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

The Lions won the first game, 11-2, and won the second, 5-2.

Tyler Steele did not allow an earned run in 6 1/3 innings to improve to 3-0 in the second game, in which Michael Fuchs was three for three and Josh Weeks drove in three runs for the Lions (8-4, 3-0 in conference).

In the opener, Brock Eissman was four for five and capped a string of four relievers to work one scoreless inning apiece by striking out the side in the ninth to preserve the win for Chris Lumanlan (2-0).

Fuchs had a home run and two RBIs, while Trai Patrick was two for five with three RBIs for the Lions.

Eissman was six for eight in the two games, while Patrick was three for six with four RBIs.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Cal State Northridge

The host Anteaters earned a 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 15-9 win in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Saturday.

Tamir Hershko (19 kills), Thomas Hodges (15) and Karl Apfelbach (12) led the attack, while Scott Stadick tied a career-high with eight block assists to go with seven kills for the winners (9-5, 6-4 in conference).

Senior Michael Saeta had a career-best 55 assists and hit .714 with five kills on five swings.

Northridge is 9-5, 2-5.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Fullerton 73, Orange Coast 62

The host Pirates fell to 17-13, 5-7 in the Orange Empire Conference and can do no better than a tie for third with Santa Ana and Riverside, who are both 5-6 with one game to play.

Sarah Nunes had 23 points and eight rebounds off the bench, Michelle Wu had 19 points on six-for-11 three-point shooting, and Megan McCullough had nine points and 11 rebounds for OCC.

Fullerton is 11-16, 3-8.

UC Davis 62, UC Irvine 42

DAVIS – Andee Ritter had 16 points, five rebounds and four steals for the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game on Saturday.

Brooke Bayman had 10 points, six assists and zero turnovers for UCI (3-21, 1-9 in conference).

Davis is 18-6, 9-2.

MEN’S GOLF

PRO Compression Invitational

RANCHO SANTA FE — UC Irvine junior David Kim finished eighth to help the Anteaters place fourth in the 12-team field at the 54-hole event concluded Tuesday at the Farms Golf Club.

UCI finished with a team total of 882, 30 shots behind victorious UC Santa Barbara.

Kim shot a three-under-par 69 in the final round to post a 215. His 69 was the second-lowest round of the day and helped him record his fourth top-10 finish of the season.

Junior Jonathan Young (23rd at 223), sophomore Chris Parkinson (26th at 224), junior Ryan O’Connor (32nd at 225) and junior Johnny Hyun (41st at 231) also scored for UCI.

UCI returns to action Feb. 27-28 in the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.
