High school roundup: Corona del Mar boys’ volleyball sweeps Edison

Senior outside hitter Brandon Browning finished with 13 kills and seven digs, and the Corona del Mar High boys’ volleyball team defeated host Edison 25-22, 25-17, 25-21 in Wednesday night’s nonleague match.

Junior outside hitter Adam Flood added six kills for CdM, which won its season opener for the fifth year in a row.

The Sea Kings will compete in the Best of the West Tournament on Friday and Saturday in San Diego.

Newport Harbor 3, Capistrano Valley 0: Junior outside hitter Blake Ludes had six kills, and Newport Harbor swept its home opener 25-8, 25-15, 25-20 on Wednesday.

The Sailors (2-0) head to San Diego’s Best of the West Tournament, which takes place Friday and Saturday.

BASEBALL

Newport Harbor 7, San Juan Hills 2: Senior Matt Weiss got the win for the visiting Sailors, striking out four and giving up four hits and one unearned run in the Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division game on Wednesday.

AJ Stefano threw two innings and had a double and a run batted in for Newport Harbor (3-3), which wraps up tournament play at home with Trabuco Hills at 3 p.m.

Brad Siegel went three for four with two RBIs, a double and two runs, and Cameron Mahaffy was two for four with two runs.

Riverside Martin Luther King 6, Corona del Mar 2: Junior Luc Stuka had two hits for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Newport Elks Tournament Frank Lerner Division game at home.

J.T. Schwartz doubled for CdM (1-3).

The Sea Kings close out the tournament at home Friday against Tesoro at 3 p.m.

Downey Warren 13, Estancia 2: The host Eagles suffered their first setback in the Orange County Division of the Newport Elks Tournament on Wednesday.

Estancia (5-2) finishes tournament play at home against Downey Calvary Chapel on Friday at 3 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 12, Samueli Academy 0: Senior Brittany Walker and junior Dioselin Soto combined on a no-hitter for the Eagles in their nonleague game on Wednesday at Santiago Park in Santa Ana.

Junior Micaiah Watanabe-Patterson went four for five with a double and a triple. She also had four RBIs.

The Eagles (4-2) host Brethren Christian in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is at 10 a.m.

Beckman 9, Newport Harbor 0: The host Sailors were held without a hit in their Savanna Showcase game on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshmen Alexis Amaro and Kendall Kelly earned walks for Newport Harbor (2-4).

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 185, Mater Dei 187: Chargers junior Anthony Dao earned the individual medalist honor for the second straight time, shooting two-under-par 34 in a nonleague match at Santa Ana’s Willowick Golf Course on Wednesday.

Tony DiBernardo had a 35 for Edison, which improved to 4-0.

Costa Mesa 236, Calvary Chapel 262: Senior Jimmy Solano was the individual medalist for the Mustangs, finishing with a two-over-par 38 in an Orange Coast League match at Mile Square Golf Course on Wednesday.

San Juan Hills 212, Newport Harbor 214: Junior Ethan Barnes shot an even-par 36 for the Sailors in a nonleague match at San Juan Capistrano’s Marbella Country Club on Wednesday.

Servite 182, Fountain Valley 208: Junior Josh Vo led the Barons with a four-over-par 39 in Wednesday’s nonleague match at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.

Ethan Nguyen had a 42 for Fountain Valley, which plays Lakewood at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach on Thursday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 17, Dana Hills 1: Kyle Pham, Diego Fernandez del Valle and Bradley Amor all swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s nonleague road match.

Pham and Fernandez del Valle both won all 18 of their games played for CdM (4-0).

The teams of Luke Muradliyan and Tyler Hollander, as well as John Dick and Will Pellegrini, both won twice in doubles.

CdM hosts Palos Verdes on March 14 at 3:15 p.m.

Laguna Beach 10, Mater Dei 8: Blake Hawkins and Matt Berk swept at No. 1 doubles for the Breakers in Wednesday’s nonleague road match.

Laguna Beach (2-1) plays at Trabuco Hills on Thursday.

Laguna Beach 100, Pacifica 70: The Breakers won their nonleague season opener Wednesday at home.
