Edison remains in league title hunt
Edison stayed in a share of the Sunset League softball lead by picking up a victory Tuesday and Ocean View scored a key road win to take hold of sole possession of first place in the Golden West League.
Edison was a 5-2 winner over rival Fountain Valley. The Chargers, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, used home runs by Maddy Hickman and Jessica Plaza, and two hits apiece from sisters Karley and Ali Wester to get the win. Junior Sammy Cordova went the distance, struck out eight and improved to 20-3.
“We overcame some adversity in the beginning to grind out the victory,” said Coach Josh Musselman, whose Chargers fell behind, 2-0, but came back to run their record to 21-3 and 6-1 in league and stay tied for first place with Los Alamitos.
Brenda Bott’s two-run home run in the top of the second inning gave Fountain Valley (17-9, 3-4) a 2-0 lead. Emily Brucelas (double), Khailey Campos (double), Tara Robinson, Cerissa Rivera, Kelli Tatum and Madi Perez also had hits for the Barons.
Marina improved to 4-3 in league and 14-9 overall Tuesday by routing Newport Harbor, 8-1. Samantha Agamaite went two for three with a double and sophomore Tera Blanco, who is nursing a bad back, struck out nine to run her record to 12-5.
“Our team is getting stronger every day and I’m proud of their perseverance,” Marina Coach Shelly Luth said. “We have faced a lot of adversity this year and we are hopefully peaking at the right time.”
Huntington Beach slipped to 2-5 in league and 14-10 overall after dropping a 12-0 game Tuesday at league co-leader Los Alamitos (18-6, 6-1). Jacqui Pasqual and Emily Stoner had the only hits for the Oilers.
Next week marks the end of the Sunset season. On Tuesday, Edison travels to Marina, Fountain Valley goes to Los Alamitos (both games are 3:15 p.m.), and Huntington hosts Newport Harbor at 6 p.m. The May 10 schedule features a showdown between Los Alamitos and host Edison, Fountain Valley heading to Newport Harbor and Marina hosting Huntington.
Ocean View solidified its lead in the Golden West League on April 25 by scoring a 2-1 win at Segerstrom. Brittany Hitchcock allowed only four hits and struck out nine to bring her season record to 11-3. The junior is 6-0 in league play. The Seahawks’ offensive attack was paced by Cassie Baughman with three hits and Erika Jason and Kristin Nance, who both had two hits.
The win put the Seahawks, ranked No. 6 in Division 4, at 6-0 in league. Segerstrom, ranked eighth, fell to 5-1.
Ocean View plays a 3:15 p.m. league game Friday at Loara. Next week, the Seahawks travel for a 3:30 p.m. game at Santa Ana and close out league and regular-season play Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. home showdown against Segerstrom.
