Chicago — Luego del incendio ocurrido en la Catedral de Notre Dame en París, Francia, las muestras de solidaridad, recuerdos e historias del monumento han salido a relucir.
Una, es la que vincula a la mexicana María Antonieta Valeria Rivas Mercado Castellanos (Ciudad de México, 28 de abril de 1900 - París, 11 de febrero de 1931), conocida como Antonieta Rivas Mercado.
Actriz, escritora, mecenas, promotora cultural y activista política, fue una de los seis hijos del matrimonio integrado por Matilde Castellanos Haaf y el arquitecto Antonio Rivas Mercado, creador de El Ángel de la Independencia y muchos de los edificios y monumentos históricos construidos durante el gobierno del presidente Porfirio Díaz, periodo conocido como “El Porfiriato” (1876 -1911).

Antonieta, como compartió la escritora Tayde Acosta Gamas, autora del libro “Antonieta Rivas Mercado, obras”, se suicidó en la Catedral de Notre Dame el 11 de febrero de 1931.
Antonieta se disparó en la Catedral de Notre Dame, pero murió horas más tarde en el Hôtel-Dieu de París, el hospital más antiguo de París, precisó.
“Antonieta se suicidó frente al Cristo Crucificado, la imagen más simbólica de la Catedral, derivado de esto el gobierno de México, el gobierno de Pascual Ortiz Rubio, envió una imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe, como disculpa porque una mexicana se suicidó en ese lugar, por eso existe esa imagen de la Virgen en la Catedral, la Catedral cambió de sitio al Cristo Crucificado, y en ese lugar colocaron a la Virgen”, describió Acosta Gamas en su página de Facebook.
Sin embargo, el diario Mexicano El Universal precisa que el altar dedicado a “la patrona de México”, data de 1949. La imagen, según Acosta, es la que envió Pascual Ortiz Rubio.
Aunque los trámites para la coronación de Santa María de Guadalupe en la Catedral de París comenzaron en 1938, a solicitud del entonces Arzobispo de México, Mons. Luis María Martínez, y su par de Guadalajara, Mons. José Garibi, debido a la II Guerra Mundial (1939 -1945) se detuvo el proyecto.
La coronación de la imagen tuvo lugar el 26 de abril de 1949. “La corona, en oro de 18 kilates, fue mandada hacer en Roma con adornos de perlas y esmeraldas”, se precisa. Y el 25 de abril de 2013 se colocó una imagen de San Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin.

La vida de Antonieta
Dada la posición económica de su padre, Antonieta recibió una educación y formación privilegiadas.
A los 18 años contrajo matrimonio con el inglés Albert Edward Blair, y en 1919 nació su hijo Donald Antonio. En 1921 comienzan los problemas entre la pareja, ocasionados por las diferencias de ideas y posturas políticas. Tras varios intentos de reconciliación, se separan en 1926 y se enfrascan en la lucha por la custodia de su hijo.
Rivas Mercado tuvo un papel destacado en la candidatura presidencial de José Vasconcelos Calderón, de quien fue compañera sentimental en los años de 1928 y 1929.
Vasconcelos (1882 -1959), fungió como Secretario de Educación Pública de México y fue rector de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
Al ser derrotado Vasconcelos (por un escandaloso fraude electoral en su contra), Rivas Mercado se exilió sucesivamente en la ciudad de Nueva York y en París, en donde trabajó como escritora y periodista.
Al morir su padre en 1927, Antonieta heredó una gran fortuna que destinó a la cultura y artes mexicanas, como el patrocinio al Teatro de Ulises (1927-1928), que integraron Salvador Novo, Xavier Villaurrutia, Gilberto Owen, Agustín Lazo, Roberto Montenegro, Manuel Rodríguez Lozano, Lupe Medina de Ortega, Clementina Otero, entre otros.

En 1929, según publicó el diario mexicano Excélsior, conoció al político y educador José Vasconcelos, con quien estableció una relación sentimental, además de apoyarlo en su candidatura presidencial. Vasconcelos perdió la contienda ante Pascual Ortiz Rubio, quien fue elegido presidente de México (1930 — 1932).
Luego de exiliarse en Nueva York y sin el apoyo de su familia, agobiada por haber perdido un juicio la patria potestad de su hijo, lo secuestra y huye con él a Burdeos, Francia. Ahí se refugia y escribe uno de los textos más reveladores sobre el sistema político mexicano, “La campaña de Vasconcelos”.
En 1931 funda en París junto a Vasconcelos la revista Antorcha. Sin embargo, al verse perseguida por la falta de dinero y sin el apoyo de Vasconcelos, fue que se suicidó, con la pistola de él.

Se comparte que Rivas le dijo a Vasconcelos: “Dime si me necesitas”. Él respondió: “Ningún alma necesita de otra. Nadie, ni hombre ni mujer, necesita más que de Dios. Cada uno tiene su destino ligado con el creador”.
Acto seguido al suicidio de Rivas, la iglesia celebró una ceremonia especial para “limpiar” el recinto.
Fue enterrada, según el diario Milenio, en el cementerio de Thiai; pero al caducar la concesión de la tumba, sus restos fueron llevados a la fosa común.
La historia de Antonieta también fue motivo de inspiración del libro “A la sombra del ángel”, de Kathryn S. Blair, la nuera de Antonieta Rivas Mercado.
