Hospital names new chief executive

Julie Sprengel, a former administrator at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, returned to the local 431-bed hospital this week as chief executive.

Sprengel — the medical center’s former chief operating officer and, prior to that, its chief nursing officer — succeeds Michael Rembis, who was tapped by Providence Southern California to work on special projects for the Catholic healthcare organization.

“Julie offers a wealth of experience and a dedication to the Providence mission and values,” said Karl Carrier, interim chief executive, Providence Health & Services, Southern California, in a statement.

Hospital officials said Sprengel has a diverse healthcare management background with experience in operations, strategic planning, financial analysis and clinical integration.

A registered nurse, she left Providence Saint Joseph in 2012 to become vice president of physician integration for Dignity Health.

“I am so excited to be back at Providence Saint Joseph, working with some of the most dedicated and talented physicians and caregivers,” Sprengel said in a statement. “Our hospital is taking great strides, working toward our core strategy of working with partners to improve health outcomes in the communities we serve.”

Sprengel joined Providence in 2005 and worked in a variety of positions, including associate administrator supporting the cardiovascular and emergency services departments.

As chief operating officer, she played an instrumental role in establishing the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center and the Hycy and Howard Hill Neuroscience Institute, according to Providence Saint Joseph officials.

Sprengel holds a nursing degree from the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California School of Nursing, and a bachelor’s degree in management and master’s in business administration from Pepperdine University.

Her experience includes nursing positions at Good Samaritan Hospital, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and Centinela Hospital Medical Center. She also served as director of emergency medical services for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
