On the same page with Father Boyle
Father Gregory Boyle will give a presentation about his new book, “Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion,” at 7 tonight at the Laguna Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave.
The book, a compilation of essays about the work Boyle has done to help Los Angeles gang members begin a new life, is the latest addition to Latitude 33 Bookshop’s “Laguna on the Same Page” program, which aims to bring the community together to read and discuss great books.
The bookshop invites the community to read Boyle’s book, of which a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Homeboy Industries, Boyle’s organization, and to hear him speak.
Artists open their studios
Artist Open Studios begins Saturday, an opportunity to peer into the creative spaces of Laguna’s painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, printmaker, glass, fiber and jewelry artists, and buy local art from the source.
The City’s Arts Commission-sponsored event takes place on the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 40 artist studios will be open for self-guided tours.

Holiday party at Cove Gallery
The public is invited to attend a special Holiday Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at The Cove Gallery, at 1492 S. Coast Hwy. in Laguna’s “Hip & Historic” District.
The event will serve up exotic European chocolates and champagne, collections by painter Farshid Babazadeh and ceramicist John Steenhoven Babazadeh whose works will be on display for the month of November as well an opportunity for patrons to chat with these exhibiting artists and discuss their work.
The Gallery will also introduce painter Kathe Choate, who recently replaced Jeanne Baer after her retirement.
Choate was born and raised in England but has spent most of her life in Southern California, where she draws much of her inspiration from play of color and light in nature, the California coastline, and the English countryside. Among her recent works are 30” x 30” single roses.

Mohan Bhasker at Artist Eye Gallery
Laguna physician and photographer, Dr. Mohan Bhasker will feature his recent works, “Splendors of the World,” through Nov. 30 at Artist Eye Gallery, 1294-A S. Coast Hwy.
An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
The collection of photographs depict the artists love of nature and the beauty he uncovers from the glaciers of New Zealand to the rain forests and volcanoes of Costa Rica.
Bhasker’s journey into the art of photography began in his childhood in India when his father bought him his first camera, an Agfa box camera, which he used to take photos of everyday life. Images of roads lined with brightly colored saris and flowering trees were the seeds of his artistic inspiration.
In the late 1970s, he moved to the U.S. to complete his study in medicine. Now a physician, he is an advocate of the philosophy of living a balanced life. Traveling all over the world, he is active in outdoor pursuits and his love of nature and has heavily influenced his growing passion for photography.
“‘Splendors of the World’ is the true essence and meaning behind every image that I have spent relentless and countless hours trying to capture and project through my camera lens,” he said. “The challenge that I often face is trying to find that perfect image that grabs not only my artistic vision, but also provides me with an emotional connection with nature. When I encounter this vision, I know I have captured the perfect shade of tranquility.”

‘Pink’ show draws local artists
A group of local artists are banding together to battle breast cancer.
Wyland, Marco Almera, Jean Marie Christian, Karen Brailovsky, Greg Martin, Lu Martin, Maria Bertran, Veronica Christov, Robin Altman, Fred Hope and Veronica Khristov will partake in The Pink Art Show from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Milonakis Group Real Estate office, 24591 Del Prado, Ste. A in Dana Point.
Hosted by the The Milonakis Group and Kristen Babiracki, from USA National Title Company, the event will aim to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, with a goal of $10,000 to be donated to breast cancer research.
All artists will donate a portion of the proceeds from art sales, and money will also be raised from the silent auction, wine and beer sales.
“This is a great way to raise awareness for a disease that affects so many people,” co-organizer Kristen Babiracki said. “We wanted to have the event after October, so that we can raise awareness for cancer year round, not just during the month of November.”
The show will feature an array of artwork, live music entertainment and painting by one of the artists.
The free event is open to anyone, and pink attire is encouraged.
