Art museum renames library after volunteer

The Laguna Art Museum honored two volunteers at its open house Tuesday night, and renamed its library after one of them.

The facility is now called the Carole Reynolds Art Research Library, in honor of the Laguna resident who has volunteered with the museum for 27 years, museum officials announced in a news release. Reynolds has been the museum’s volunteer librarian for the past 20 years.

She is active in the community as president of the Friends of the Library. She also serves on the Arts Commission and co-founded the Community Art Project, according to the release.

Lindy Narver, who helps Reynolds in the museum library, was honored Tuesday as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year. Narver has helped Janet Blake, the curator of collections, in archiving and curating projects this year, the release said.

More than 200 people turned out for the annual open house event at the museum at 307 Cliff Drive.

Learn how to make sea lion masks

A workshop on how to make sea lion masks will take place at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center on Saturday.

Offered by the Laguna Outreach for Community Arts, the mask-making workshop will happen after people participating in it take a tour of the center, according to a news release. Joan Corman will conduct the workshop for beginners.

The cost for enrolling is $20 for grown-ups and $15 for kids ages 6 and older.

Billy Childs is coming to Artists Theatre

Laguna Beach Live! said in a news release that musician Billy Childs, winner of the 2011 Grammy award for Jazz Album of the Year, will play a concert in Laguna Beach on Saturday night.

The concert at the Laguna Beach Artists Theatre, 625 Park Ave., will start at 8 p.m. and will be videotaped for upcoming KOCE PBS-SoCal broadcasts, according to a news release. The Calder String Quartet will accompany the Billy Childs Sextet, the release said.

Tickets cost $25 to $35, and $15 for students and those 21 or younger. For $50, including a tax-deductible donation to Laguna Beach Live!, some prime seats are available.

Artists are Hong Kong-bound

A local art gallery, Dawson Cole Fine Art of Laguna Beach, will travel with a group of its core artists to an exhibition in Hong Kong next week.

Works by gallery artists Richard MacDonald, Jian Wang, Wayne Thiebaud, Chuck Close and Donald Sultan will be shown at the Oct. 3 to 7 Fine Art Asia 2011 event at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Center, Dawson Cole Fine Art said in a news release.

“Hong Kong is a perfect example of a rising economy, rising interest and rising curiosity for contemporary art,” Ariane MacDonald, the gallery’s co-owner and co-director, said in a prepared statement. “It is the center of the Far East, the center of art, and we are very excited about showing our artists at the fair.”

First Sundays series kicks off this weekend

Enjoy an afternoon of chamber music and art as Laguna Beach Live! presents the First Sundays series beginning this Sunday at the Laguna College of Art & Design,

The college’s art gallery will open at 2 p.m., and a concert featuring husband-and-wife duo Lauren Smith (soprano) and Chris Woods (violin) is from 3 to 4 p.m.

The American Assn. of University Women, Laguna Beach is sponsoring the first concert in the series. First Sundays is a collaboration between Laguna Beach Live! and LCAD, and shows will be on the first Sunday of every month from October through May, excluding January.

The concert will be in Studio 1 at LCAD, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.
