In the Arts: Painting to raise Playhouse funds

Share

Laguna Beach residents Matt and Mary Lawson bequeathed a still-life oil painting by Virginia Woolley to the Laguna Playhouse.

Woolley, a founder of the Festival of Arts and a local resident between 1923 and 1971, created the 20-by-16-inch “Fruit Still Life” to showcase bright colors framed by gold and wood.

“After a year and a half of engagement with the Laguna Playhouse, my wife Mary, and I, have become devotees of the Laguna Playhouse,” Lawson said in a release. “We have come to enjoy both the performances and social opportunities that the Playhouse has brought to us and are delighted that we can help this special Laguna arts institution with an opportunity to raise funds for their good work.”

Dinner will support Sawdust Education Fund

The Sawdust Art Festival will host the 2013 “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” fundraising event from 3 to 7 p.m. March 10 at the Sawdust grounds, 935 Laguna Canyon Road. Part of the Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau’s annual “Laguna a la Carte,” the evening will feature a three-course meal with wine and beer pairings, prepared by Three Seventy Common owner Chef Ryan Adams.

Sawdust artists will create custom dining ware, serving ware and stemware specifically for this event. Proceeds will aid the Sawdust Art Education Fund and be used in the production of a 15-minute educational artist video supporting the organization’s mission, a venture that has been paused since 2009 due to insufficient funding.

Space is limited, and admission is $195 per person.
