Bicyclist killed in crash with SUV was San Bernardino sheriff’s detective
The funeral for a San Bernardino County deputy from Irvine who was killed in a traffic collision last week on Shady Canyon Drive will take place Wednesday morning in Rancho Cucamonga.
On Friday, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department confirmed that one of its deputies, Det. Duane Parkison, was killed in an off-duty crash with an SUV while riding his bicycle in Irvine on the afternoon of Aug. 10.
Parkison, 42, a 15-year department veteran, had been assigned to the department’s Rancho Cucamonga station for five years, according to a San Bernardino sheriff’s news release.
His funeral is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Abundant Living Family Church, 10900 Civic Center Drive, Rancho Cucamonga, said Cindy Bachman, a San Bernardino sheriff’s spokeswoman.
According to Irvine police, the fatal collision occurred about 1 p.m. Aug. 10on Shady Canyon Drive, south of Quail Hill Parkway.
Both the bicyclist and a Mercedes-Benz SUV were northbound on Shady Canyon Drive, police said in a news release.
The 35-year-old woman who was driving the SUV and an infant passenger were not hurt in the collision, Irvine police said.
The accident was under investigation. Irvine police officials could not be reached Friday for comment.
Parkison died at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana at 1:42 p.m. Wednesday, according to information posted on the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s website.
Parkison leaves behind a wife and their three children, according to San Bernardino sheriff’s officials.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Duane’s family during this very difficult time,” San Bernardino Sheriff Rod Hoops said in a prepared statement.
“Det. Parkison was a motivated member of the department dedicated to the safety of the residents of San Bernardino County,” he added. “He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing and working with him.”
San Bernardino sheriff’s officials said that cards and letters could be addressed to the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department, 10510 Civic Center Drive, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730.
A memorial fund for Parkison’s family has been established in his name, Bachman said. She said deposits can made at any Arrowhead Credit Union branch.
