John Bailey, 79, passed away after a long cancer related illness resulting from a melanoma.
John was the son of Frank A. and Helen C. Bailey. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, along with his three brothers and two sisters. John and his family moved to California in 1946 when he and his twin brother Jim were thirteen years old. John and Jim both attended Monrovia, Arcadia and Duarte High School (MAD) and Pasadena City College (PCC). John served in the Army and was stationed at the U.S. Army Hospital in Augsburg, Germany.
John entered into business with his brothers, Frank and Jim, and acquired The Inn at Laguna and The Palms on Cliff Drive. Following the business venture, John joined The Coldwell Banker Company as a Profit Center Manager and later joined The Lusk Company as an Administrative Manager. John went on to be one of the publishers of the Orange County Restaurant Review Magazine.
He was an avid yachtsman and learned boating as a young boy cruising on his father’s Chris Craft Cabin Cruiser in the Great Lakes out of the Maumee River Yacht Club near Toledo, Ohio. John became a sailor of traditional wood sailboats. In 1971 he won Balboa Yacht Club’s Opening Day, Boat of the Year Trophy, with his sloop, Tradewind. John’s favorite pastime was sailing his sloop to his mooring at Whites Cove on Catalina Island.
John is survived by his brother Jim (Diane), sisters Mary Louise Osterhout and Helen Mae Netteberg, and sister in law, Elizabeth Bailey. Many nieces and nephews also survive him. His brothers Frank and Tom preceded him in death.
