Runners, walkers and joggers of all ages will lace up their shoes for the Newport-Mesa Spirit Run March 20 at Fashion Island in Newport Beach.

The run, now in its 33rd year, dedicates its net proceeds to education and athletics programs in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

In the last five years, the run has earned more than $300,000 for Newport-Mesa, said Diane Daruty, a member of the Spirit Run’s board of directors.

The event will have a number of different races, such as a 5K and 10K for adults, a 5K for youths, a toddler trot and a 5K family walk.

Registration is open to groups within and outside Newport-Mesa. Parties who have registered so far include 18 of the district’s schools.

“The more people who register, the more we can give back,” Daruty said.
