Around Town: Citizen of Year banquet is Friday in Newport

Jack and Nancy Skinner will be honored as Citizens of the Year at a Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce banquet Friday night at the Balboa Bay Resort.

The event, which begins at 6 p.m., will include a no-host cocktail reception with hors d’oeuvres, a three-course dinner, dancing and live entertainment.

The resort is at 1221 W. Coast Highway. Banquet tickets are $125 per person.

Costa Mesa High students in art show

The works of 24 Costa Mesa High School art students were selected to be in an art show now on display at the Art Institute of California – Orange County.

Students from Advanced Placement studio, digital art and photography classes created projects based on a series by the exhibit’s featured artist, Xtine Burrough. They chose a common idiom, such as “the grass is always greener” or “hit the books,” and created montages based on word searches on the Library of Congress website.

Students selected for the exhibit are Britney Negrete, Beatriz Resendiz, Bryan Davalos, Darmonta Davis, Greg Gekchyan, Hannah Burnett, Jennifer Esqueda, John Gekchyan, Jonathan Toledo, Jackie Carranza, Kat Valdez, Ellie Aguilar, Silvia Morales, Kate Dejanio, Dominque DeBoard, Luis Ceja, Quinn Smith, Paul Tran, Valeria Osoio, Beatrice Maradiaga, Francisco Olivares, Montana Martin, Erik Flores and Yessenia Ramirez.

Hazardous-waste collection Saturday

Orange County Waste & Recycling invites the public to commemorate America Recycles Day on Saturday by taking household hazardous waste to a free collection center in Irvine from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Household hazardous waste includes common cleaning, gardening, painting and workshop products and materials that contain corrosive, toxic, flammable or reactive ingredients. It also includes propane tanks and electronic waste such as computer monitors, radios, TVs and video game consoles.
