College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball tops UC Riverside

Evan Leonard had 13 points to lead a well-balanced effort for UC Irvine men’s basketball in Saturday night’s 69-53 Big West Conference win over UC Riverside at Bren Events Center.

Brad Greene had 11 points for UC Irvine (11-8, 3-0 in conference). Tommy Rutherford, John Edgar Jr. and Collin Welp each scored nine points for the Anteaters, who never trailed and built a 38-22 halftime advantage.

UC Irvine plays at Long Beach State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Menlo 73, Vanguard 71: The Lions suffered their third straight Golden West Athletic Conference loss at home Saturday.

Isaiah Gentry and James Moore led Vanguard (10-9, 3-4 in conference) with 16 points each.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 68, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 57: Anteaters junior Haleigh Talbert scored a career-high 23 points in Saturday’s Big West Conference game on the road.

Lauren Saiki had 12 points and 11 assists for UC Irvine (5-12, 1-2 in conference). Jayde Cadee scored 15 points, all coming on five three-pointers.

UC Irvine hosts Cal State Northridge on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 73, Menlo 54: Vanessa Murphy had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden West Athletic Conference home game.

Victoria Chea scored 17 points for No. 5 Vanguard (12-2, 6-1 in conference), which has won seven straight games. Tristen Rollon added 14 points.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Gaucho Invitational

No. 5-ranked UC Irvine won twice on Saturday at UC Santa Barbara, recording a 12-7 win over No. 4 Cal and a 14-9 victory over No. 7 Michigan.

Tara Prentice, Toni Shackelford, Piper Smith, Elena Flynn and Megan Falcon all scored twice against Cal for UCI (2-0), while Flynn and Prentice each scored four goals against Michigan.

UC Irvine competes next weekend in the Cal Cup hosted by UC Berkeley.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

University of Washington Preview

UC Irvine started the season with some top performances Saturday. Brianna Villanueva had a fourth-place showing in the weight throw, including a personal-best of 58 feet, 1.25 inches that was second in school history.

Mychal Robinson matched a lifetime-best of 8.61 seconds to finish sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, while Zani Meaders finished fifth in the 400 meters in 56.02.

Hannah Chau finished the mile in 5:10.87, the ninth-fastest time in school history, while Tess Mathes was seventh in the 600 meters (1:40.94) and eighth in the 800 (2:18.24).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard 3, Springfield College 2: Kyle Anema had 22 kills for the Lions in Saturday’s 26-24, 19-25, 26-24, 24-26, 15-13 nonconference home win.

Christian Nowtash and Cody Watts each tallied nine kills for Vanguard (2-0).
