College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball beats Cal State Fullerton

Brad Greene had 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the UC Irvine men’s basketball team to a 91-61 win on Saturday in a Big West game at the Bren Events Center.

Tommy Rutherford also scored 18 points for the Anteaters (14-9, 6-1 in conference). Evan Leonard finished with 15 points and four steals. Eyassu Worku contributed 11 points and six assists.

UCI, which has won three in a row, has another home game on Thursday against UC Davis at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 77, UC Riverside 53: Sophia Locandro scored a career-high 25 points for the Anteaters in Saturday’s Big West Conference road win.

Lauren Saiki added 14 points and seven assists for UC Irvine (6-15, 2-5).

Vanguard 113, Bethesda University 23: Victoria Chea had 17 points and 12 assists as the Lions eased to a nonconference win Saturday at home.

Sierra Vaglica also had 17 points for No. 6-ranked Vanguard (16-3).

BASEBALL

Mt. San Antonio College 5, Orange Coast 3: Garret Barto had two hits, including a double and a run batted in, for the Pirates in Saturday’s nonconference road game.

Starting pitcher Jack Noble pitched three shutout innings for Orange Coast (0-3).

Grossmont 6, Golden West 2: Seth Nelson had two hits and scored two runs for the Rustlers in Saturday’s nonconference road game.

Jesse Fonteboa and Enrique Bennett each had one hit and one run batted in for Golden West (2-4).

SOFTBALL

Vanguard 13, Chapman 3: Emily Howard was three for three with two doubles and two runs scored for the Lions in the first game of Saturday’s nonconference home doubleheader.

Johanna Lewis was two for four with two runs batted in for No. 9 Vanguard (4-2), while Belle Herrera had a three-run double.

Vanguard 4, Chapman 0: Courtney Thornhill pitched seven shutout innings as the Lions swept the doubleheader.

Thornhill gave up five hits and struck out eight for Vanguard, improving to 2-1.

Karly Colenzo was three for three with three runs batted in.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 11, San Diego State 7: Tara Prentice scored four goals for the Anteaters in Saturday’s UCLA Mini Invitational match.

Piper Smith had three goals for No. 5 UC Irvine (6-2).

UC Irvine 15, Fresno State 11: Toni Shackelford led the Anteaters with five goals in Saturday’s UCLA Mini Invitational match.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine 3, USC 1: Alexandre Nsakanda had a team-high 14 kills for the visiting Anteaters in a 25-22, 25-14, 13-25, 27-25 win on Saturday in nonconference play.

Patrick Vorenkamp handed out 31 assists for UCI (5-3). Joel Schneidmiller also had 12 kills, and Scott Stadick had three kills and 10 block assists.

Recent Corona del Mar graduate Adam Flood led the Trojans with 13 kills.

Vanguard 3, Arizona Christian 0: Christian Nowtash led the Lions with 10 kills in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference road match.

Kyle Anema had nine kills for Vanguard (5-1, 3-0).

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State 5, UC Irvine 2: The Anteaters dropped their nonconference season opener Saturday at home.
